The Atkins Nutritional Approach, or better known as the Atkins Diet, mainly focuses on the insulin levels in the body through controlling the food intake.
If the diet consists mainly of refined carbohydrates, insulin levels can rise and drop rapidly. If the level of insulin is too high, the body is triggered to store the energy from the food we eat, making it less likely to use any stored fat as its energy source. People on the Atkins Diet, consume more protein than carbohydrates to control their insulin.
The Zone Diet
What makes the zone diet different from the others is that it’s specific on the proportion of carbohydrates, fats, and protein, each weighing at 40%, 30%, and 30%, respectively. These should come from good quality carbohydrates and natural fats like avocado, nuts, and olive oil. This, to also control insulin levels for easier weight loss and control.
There are different types of vegetarian, based on the type of food they consume. Namely, lacto, fruitarian, lacto – ovo, pesco, and semi – vegetarian. Majority of the vegetarians are lacto – ovo vegetarians, which basically means they avoid eating foods that are animal based, with the exception of dairy, honey, and eggs.
Studies show that vegetarians suffer less from any known diseases, have lower body weighs, and have longer life expectancy compared to individuals who consume meat.
The Vegan Diet is more of a philosophy and way of life, than a diet to be healthy. Unlike the vegetarian diet, veganism doesn’t allow consumption of anything that’s animal based, which includes dairy, eggs, and honey. Besides health reasons, people who practice veganism adopt such practice for compassionate or ethical, and environmental reasons. They believe that today’s farming methods are unsustainable and unhealthy for the environment, especially in the long term. The vegan way is also to make the animals suffer less, produce more food, and improve mental and physical health.
South Beach Diet
Dr. Agatson is the mind behind the South Beach Diet. Like other diets, it also focuses on controlling the levels of inulin in the body, and consuming more unrefined and slow carbohydrates than fast carbs. In the 1990s, however, the diet was refined because its former method of low fat and high carbohydrates diet was not effective in the long run.
