Is Organic Food Really Better?

More and more people are opting for organic produce and the media is sensationalizing it by featuring articles or documentaries on why it’s getting popular. But the question is, are they really aware of its benefits and what it can do to their health?

As there is an increase in demand, grocery stores are trying to make room to accommodate more organic produce. But what does organic really mean and is it safe for everybody?

What does organic mean?

Many people believe that organic does more benefit not only to the body, but to the environment as well, because they are grown all naturally and without the use of any chemicals. Instead of using pesticides, organic farms resort to natural means of controling pests and preventing any diseases in their animals. This includes frequently rotating crops to stave off any insects, use of manure or compost as fertiizer, give more freedom to the animals so they could roam more instead of being caged in, and use of organic feed for their livestock, to name a few.

Are there benefits for going organic?

Going organic is always a personal decision. While some people don’t prefer eating food that may contain chemicals and pesticides, there are also some who choose organic because it tastes better and is healthier to consume. There is also the philosophy that choosing organic food helps sustain the earth and the practices of organic farming helps in improving the sustainability of water, land, and food.

Besides, children and pregnant women are the perfect candidates for going organic as they are more prone to the negative effects of fertilizers and chemicals, which makes it perfect for them to consume organic food.

Certified organic?

Before being claimed as organic, the products must meet the set standards of the USDA or the United States Department of Agriculture. Organic produce are labeled with “USDA Organic” so you’ll know it’s different from hormone – free and natural produce, which are not necessarily organic.

Buying from the farmer’s market however, makes it more difficult to verify organic products. However, there’s no need to worry much about it because local produce usually contain few to no chemicals since they are not packaged for travel.

It’s not surprising also that organic produce is more expensive since it requires more for production. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to pay the extra cost just to get the benefits offered by going organic. You can always opt for store brands that are generic, instead of going for the pricier brands. It will also be cheaper to buy in bulk and freeze extra food for future consumption.

Just remember that choosing organic is always a personal choice. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to join the bandwagon just because more and more people are making the change also. Although organic produce can be a bit pricier compared to products grown using chemicals, the health benefits it can give and how it helps the earth’s sustainability are priceless.
